AED Requirements Summary

  • Physician: No laws currently apply.
  • CPR/AED Training: Anyone planning to use an AED must be trained by organizations like the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Delaware State Fire School, or another approved provider. The training must be approved by the State EMS Medical Director.
  • EMS Notification: The State EMS Medical Director keeps a record of everyone who gets an AED using state funds.
  • Maintenance Program: The AED must be regularly maintained and tested following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Notification of Use: If someone uses an AED to help a person in cardiac arrest, they must quickly inform the local EMS and report the AED’s use to the appropriate doctor or medical authority.
