In the chain of survival (Alert, Massage, Defibrillate), defibrillation is the 3rd step to perform (alternating with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also called cardiac massage). Once the lifeguard is in possession of the AED, here are the steps to use it:- Make sure the victim is positioned on a dry surface before using the AED. If not, you can move the victim, but be extremely careful. Also check the positioning of the AED: if it is positioned on a conductive surface (such as metal) it may not function properly.
- Start the AED by pressing the “On” button. If it is a fully automatic defibrillator, this is the only button you will have to use.
- Place the electrodes on the victim’s chest. If you have any doubts about the placement of the electrodes, refer to the diagram on them. The 1st electrode is positioned below the victim’s right shoulder, the 2nd is used on the left side of the chest, below the victim’s armpit. On a pediatric victim, the first electrode is positioned on the left side of the sternum, and the second, in the back, between the shoulder blades. It is necessary to ensure that the electrodes are well positioned, because if this is not the case, the electrical current used to carry out the defibrillation could lose its effectiveness. If the victim’s skin is not dry, consider wiping it before placing the electrodes. If the victim’s chest is hairy, do not hesitate to shave it before starting the positioning of the electrodes. Wet skin or too much hair would affect the adhesion of the electrodes. An intervention kit containing compresses, a razor or scissors is often made available with AEDs in order to properly prepare the victim.
